Probation is a court disposition that authorizes the offender to remain at large in the community subject to conditions prescribed in a probation order.
A probation officer prepares reports, enforces probation orders, assesses offenders in order to make effective case management decisions and determine rehabilitative interventions (including referral for educational, counselling, or treatment programs).

The Crown Attorney’s office is responsible for prosecuting criminal offences which occur in Huron County. These include violent offences including threatening, assault, sexual assault, robbery and homicide. Police officers lay criminal charges and Crown Attorneys are responsible for all stages of a prosecution, including providing advice to police, screening charges and attending court hearings. Crown Attorneys meet with victims of crime.

Victim Services Huron county is a Non-Profit organization that supports community members during crisis or tragic circumstances by offering emotional support or practical assistance. Specifically, Victim Services Huron frequently supports victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and tragic circumstances such as sudden death.
Victim Services is the connection to apply for government funding through VQRP+ which offers immediate assistance and supports victims of violent crimes. This could include homicide or attempted homicide, criminal harassment, child abuse, serious physical assault, domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking and hate crimes.

Victim/Witness Assistance Program

The Victim/Witness Assistance Program provides information, assistance and support to victims and witnesses of crime to increase their understanding of, and participation in, the criminal court process.
Services are provided on a priority basis to the most vulnerable victims and witnesses of violent crime, such as domestic violence, child abuse, sexual assault, homicide and hate crime. Families of traffic fatality victims are also eligible. Services begin once police have laid charges and continue until the court case is over.
